"Sometimes, it really is more than just a figurine," says renowned holiday artist and designer Jim Shore, referencing the significance of his folk art inspired Christmas collection. So when it came to designing a line of whimsical holiday pieces for a collection with Country Living, he knew exactly how to create something truly special. Buffalo checks, well-adorned snowmen, earthy greens, and a smiling Santa driving a vintage pickup truck—his pieces capture the true essence of Christmas in the country.
Jim, now a legend in the giftware industry, spent years developing his craft. He started his business in his small backyard garage studio in the 1980s, creating figurines for local children and families one-by-one as the orders came in. After setting up a Christmas booth at his first holiday show, the business took off. Crowds swarmed his table, placing orders by the dozen for the holiday magic he so thoughtfully created.
Raised by a simple mill family in rural South Carolina, Jim expresses his deep appreciation for the country life and believes it shows through his work. "Southern thinking inspires design," says Jim. "Country people are great, smart, bright, and resourceful." Inspired and encouraged by his artistic parents and his grandmother, an expert quilter, he also thanks his family for their support and celebration of the arts while he was growing up. "They created an environment for me that was a wonderful place for a young budding artist," he says. Alongside his art, growing up Jim also worked with his grandfather (accompanied by his dog, Shorty) on a beloved 1956 Chevy. Those homemade, folk elements Jim saw growing up—quilts, humble materials, barn paint, and more—combined with his treasured memories can now be found in his figurines, which makes them so incredibly unique and adored today.
Most of all, Jim appreciates the holiday spirit and magic of Christmas. He aims to create pieces that are more than just decor to anyone who purchases his work. Having fond memories of Christmas himself, he hopes his pieces fill homes with whimsical cheer. Jim says it is incredibly gratifying hearing others share Christmas stories that involve his art, "Some stories are happy and some are sad, but they are all special to me."
